Top Hammer Drilling Systems

In Top Hammer drilling systems, instead of the hammer being lowered into the drill hole, it is positioned above the hole on the ground level. The drilling process is carried out through the drill rod, which is connected to the bit at its tip and inserted into the hole.

It’s worth mentioning that the hammer force is transferred through the shank, then the bushing, to the rod, and finally to the bit.

Considering the mining methods used in Iran and the high popularity of the D.T.H system, some disadvantages can be listed for the Top Hammer system, including:

• Energy loss in the rod
• Deviation of the drilling path
• Limited drilling depth (maximum 10 meters)
• Limited drilling diameter (suitable for small diameters)
• High cost of the drill wagon and hammer

However, there is one advantage to this method, which is greater penetration in the 76 mm diameter range.

Top hammer drilling is mainly performed with two systems, R and T. The difference between the R and T systems lies in the type of teeth and the length of their thread pitches. Accordingly, the system (32 and 38) is used for small to medium diameters, and the system (38 to 51) is used for medium to large diameters.
